PhD - Doctor of PhilosophyAcademics > Doctor of Philosophy Doctoral study in the Department of Health and Exercise Science consists of the independent mastery of a field of knowledge and the successful pursuit of research in Exercise Physiology or Health Promotion. The Ph.D. degree is awarded for excellence in research scholarship and signifies the attainment of independently acquired and comprehensive learning in one of these disciplines. The mission of the Ph.D. program in Health and Exercise Science is to train individuals for careers as scholars, educators, and researchers in these disciplines. A student should normally expect to spend four full academic years beyond the master's degree. During this period the student will take course work, successfully complete the general oral and written examinations, and submit and successfully defend the results of original research. The total number of hours, combining both formal courses and hours of research, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree will be ninety post-baccalaureate hours, exclusive of credits accumulated to satisfy research tool requirements.
