Research
In general, research in the Department
of Health and Exercise Science focuses on the health benefits of exercise
and physical activity. Faculty members have a variety of specific research
interests including
Exercise Physiology
- the influence of exercise on endocrine responses and bone metabolism.
- age related changes in neuromuscular function and body composition.
- cellular and biochemical adaptations to exercise and nutritional
interventions.
- understanding the patterns of response of the EMG and MMG signals
may provide information regarding the interactions between motor
unit recruitment and firing rate that are necessary to modulate
skeletal muscle force production, which may be unique for healthy
young, middle-aged, older adults, and those with neuromuscular diseases.
- effects of nutritional intervention on metabolism, exercise performance,
muscle function and body composition in trained and untrained
men and women.
Health Promotion
-
measurement of physical activity and changes in physical performance,
- instrument development,
- socio-behavioral determinants of lifestyle
physical activity patterns,
- health promotion program evaluation,
- health outcomes associated
with lifestyle modification (particularly level of physical activity),
- assessment of functional ability and physical performance in older
adults
